What Automatic actually does
When you tap connect with Automatic selected, SecureNet looks at the servers that are currently healthy, considers how far each one is from you by measured latency, weighs that against how many people are on it, and picks the best combination. It is not "the server in your country"; it is the one that will be fastest for you right now. Because it is recalculated each time, it adapts as servers get busy or quiet through the day.
If you are connecting for privacy on public Wi-Fi, Automatic is the correct choice every time. The location does not matter; the speed does.
Reading the server list
Open the Servers tab and each server shows a few pieces of information. They are worth understanding if you ever choose by hand.

The search field filters by country or city. Tapping a server connects to it, or switches if you are already connected; SecureNet warns you that the current session will be dropped, because switching means a new tunnel.
When to choose by hand
You need a specific country
If a service behaves differently by region, or your bank expects to see you at home, the location is the point and Automatic cannot know that. Pick the country, and stick with the same one for that service so it does not look like you are hopping around. The travel guide has more on this.
Automatic's pick is slow for you
It happens: a server looked good a second ago and got busy, or your route to it is poor. Look at the list, pick a neighbouring country with low load, and run the speed test in Settings. A service blocks the server you are on
Some services block addresses they recognise as VPN servers. Another server in the same country often works. There is no way to predict this from the list; it is trial and error.
What not to do
- Do not pick the farthest server for "more privacy". Distance adds latency and changes nothing about how well your traffic is protected. Encryption is the same on every server.
- Do not switch servers constantly. Each switch is a new tunnel and, for services that watch location, a new place. Pick one and stay.
- Do not judge a server by one bad minute. Load changes. Reconnect with Automatic before deciding a server is bad.
Going back to Automatic
At the top of the Servers tab, the Recommended card shows Automatic and the server it currently resolves to. Tap it to hand the decision back. Most people set a country once for a trip and return to Automatic when they get home.
Frequently asked questions
Is the closest server always the fastest?
Usually, but not always. A close server under heavy load can be slower than a slightly farther one with few users. Automatic weighs both.
Does the server location affect my privacy?
No. Traffic is encrypted the same way to every server. Location changes what websites see as your origin, not how well your data is protected on the way.
How often does Automatic re-evaluate?
Each time you connect. If you want a fresh pick, disconnect and connect again, or tap the refresh button at the top of the Servers tab.
Can I save a favourite server?
SecureNet remembers your last manual choice. To go back to Automatic, tap the Recommended card at the top of the Servers tab.
